Japanese Neo-Folk Fusion!
Mitsune blends traditional Japanese folk music with wild and innovative blues, rock, and jazz, as well as cinematic and ritualistic sounds, breathing new life into ancient stories. Led by a powerful duo of female shamisen players, accompanied by percussion and bass, the group serves up modern Japanese folklore with driving rhythms and decadent costume design.
At the heart and soul of Mitsune is the shamisen, a three-stringed Japanese lute used by traveling musicians in old Japan. Mitsune both honors and modernizes the shamisen tradition, conveying stories and raw emotions through this ancient instrument. Japanese folk songs are revived as compositions filled with virtuosity.
On stage, Mitsune delivers a visual and costumed spectacle where tradition meets avant-garde, spiced with imagination and sheer joy of playing.
