Terra Incognita – folk music in orchestral format

Bergen-based composer Ørjan Matre and folk musician Erlend Apneseth have made excellent use of their time together. The result is a work that—drawing on archival recordings—combines Norwegian folk music, a classical tonal language, contemporary music, and improvisation. While Apneseth plays three Hardanger fiddles simultaneously, the sinfonietta BIT20 Ensemble propels the work forward with strength and power. Meidell and Hegg-Lunde add layer upon layer of electronic processing, organic depth, and rhythmic drive. At the same time, it is a distinctly melodic work, opening up a spectrum of emotions—from euphoria and joy to longing and nostalgia.

“My greatest musical experience so far this year” (Bergens Tidende on the premiere).
